I would like to ask about regex. Why these 2 doesn't behave the same?

location ~ /(apple/|pear/(small|big)/|test(ing|er)/(fruit|vegis)_)*

location ~ /apple/*|/pear/(small|big)/*|/test(ing|er)/(fruit|vegis)_*


could you point me to good practice?
